You And Your Children Know What You Want Their Rooms To Look Like When Decorating Kids Rooms

Only you and your children know what you want their rooms to look like. Or maybe you don’t exactly know yet, but by using some of the tips that follow about decorating kid’s rooms, you’ll certainly get some answers or at least some inspiration. First of all, there is no wrong or right when it comes to decorating kid’s rooms. The important thing is to create a space that is just right for your child.

A very big part of decorating kid’s rooms is your budget. Figure out how much you want to spend and what items are highest on your list of priorities before you start shopping. And plan for the essentials. Every child needs a bed, good mattress, at least one dresser and maybe a bookcase and desk.  Remember that sharp-edged furniture is not the best idea for young children who can tend to get a little wild while playing with their friends or siblings.

Now let’s go over your best choices for the floors and walls. When thinking about paint for decorating kid’s rooms, you’ll want to use washable, kid-friendly paint for the walls and any additional painted surfaces. Kid room paint is widely available in lots of bright, bold colors, is safe to use and easy to clean. Because kids’ walls tend to get a little dirtier than the rest of the house, the type and quality of paint you buy today can save you big headaches tomorrow. The best finishes for children's walls are satin, semi-gloss or eggshell indoor latex paint. With one of these types of paints, smudges or dirt will wipe right off with a damp cloth and a little mild soap.

If you’re choice for flooring options when decorating kid’s rooms is to carpet the room, keep in mind that a lower pile carpet has a flatter surface so it makes it easier for kids to play on and also for you to keep clean and vacuum because there are not deep fibers to hide germs and dirt. A recommended pile height is less than 1/3 of an inch or so.  Synthetic fibers like nylon or polypropylene that are made from plastic are popular for decorating kid’s rooms since they usually tend to be more durable and stain resistant.

When you’re selecting the colors for decorating kid’s rooms, start by checking out the paint department of your local home and garden store. This will give you a great opportunity to select from a large variety of colors. When you find the colors you like, take a couple of the sample strips home to get an idea of what they might look on the walls and/or furniture. Once you’ve made your decision on the main color, you can go ahead and pick your accent colors.

When decorating kid’s rooms, fabric plays a big role. Many bedding sets now offer coordinating window treatments but if your favorite set doesn't, then consider purchasing extra top sheets and turning them into curtains!
